Maui, Hawaii - Day 4 (September 4, 2011)

Day 4 began early again.  We were up and to breakfast at the Mala Restaurant at our resort by 6:30 a.m. where we joined some other couples for our trip on the Road to Hana.  This day by far was my favorite.  There were mixed reviews from everyone in the group that traveled to Hana but it was my favorite part of the trip.  If anyone is considering the Road to Hana in Maui - a convertible is a MUST!  We think this is what made part of our trip so fun!

Hana Highway (also known as the Road to Hana) is a 68-mile long stretch of Hawaii State Route 36 and 360 which connects Kahului with the town of Hana in East Maui.  Although Hana is only about 52 miles from Kahului, a typical trip to Hana takes about 3 hours as the road is very winding and narrow and passes over 56 bridges (46 of them are only one-lane bridges, requiring oncoming traffic to yield).  There are approximately 620 hairpin curves along Route 360 virtually all of it through lush, tropical rainforest.  Many of the concrete and steel bridges date back to 1910 and all but one are still in use.

The drive itself was breath-taking and it would have been my highlight but the stops we made were great as well and made the trip so worth it.  We left around 7 am and got back to our resort around 7 pm - full day event but we all had a great time on the Road to Hana (sorry about all the pictures/videos) this is for my 'blog book' that I'm creating!

We have four cars caravanning in our group for the Road to Hana Sunday.

Deboro, Baby Scarlett, Alana, Shelby, Mike, Nick, Shane, Kate, Michele and Andy

This local made us each something out of coconut leaves (I got a bird, one got a grasshopper, rose, etc. ) He was in love with Michele so she got the rose!

The guys decided to jump into this pool at one of the stops.  It has a very narrow place to jump or else....

Contemplating the jump

Staring and hoping the guys don't jump (our wishes did not come true)

Nick and his perfect landing.

Stopped here to get some homemade ice cream from a not so friendly lady at the Coconut Glen's.  The ice cream was served in a small Dixie cup.  It was good but definitely not $5 good!  Next time I'll stop and get the coveted banana bread that everyone was talking about instead of the $5 dixie cup ice cream!

This was the cup and here is the spoon (piece off the coconut shell)

At Mile Marker 32 is Wai'anapanapa - Maui's most famous black sand beach (pebble beach), fresh water caves, historical sites and blow holes.  I thought this place was absolutely breath-taking!

This guy had been harpooning (spear fishing) and caught these fish for his family to eat.
I had to take a picture of these very colorful fish.

Blow hole

View of the Black Sand (it's really a pebble beach not sand)
What a beautiful view to me - I could have sit here for hours just staring at the beauty of this place!
This will be my 'happy place' I think of when I need to relax!  It was breathtaking!!

Us girls playing in the waves while the guys are swimming in the fresh water lava caves

Nick and Andy outside the fresh water caves

Nick and Andy inside the cave area - they had to swim underneath that wall to get to the caves

Andy and Michele got a convertible mustang as well

Here at approximately Mile Marker 42 (at the end of the Hana Highway), is the Ohe'o Gulch (also known as the Seven Sacred Pools).  These series of waterfalls and pools is located inside the Haleakala National Park.

That concluded Road to Hana! We had a blast but were exhausted when we returned.  We ate dinner at the Mala Restaurant at our resort because we didn't feel like going anywhere else.  We soaked in the hot tub for a couple of hours with Andy, Mike, Shane, Kate, Enoch and Christina and then it was off to bed after another successful day!
